Brooks Academy Museum, Harwich, MA
About this project:
Located in the Harwich Historic District, Brooks Academy was originally opened in 1844 as a two-room private school – offering courses in surveying and navigation, English, French, Latin, Greek, piano, and drawing – and presided over by Sidney Brooks, a Harwich native. In 1869, the pillared Doric-style Greek revival building was sold to the Town of Harwich for $1,000, and in 1909, at a cost of $650, a one-story 20’ x 26’ addition was constructed to the south end of the school. Brooks Academy was closed permanently as a school in 1963 and now houses the museum of the Harwich Historical Society. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Construction was completed in 2006 for restoration of the building, including foundation underpinning and historical structural renovations to the portico, columns and cornices.
Coastal Engineering's services included:
- Structural evaluation and design
- Preparation of plans and specifications for renovations
- Construction contract administration and oversight.
