Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Wellfleet, MA
About this project:
This major site renovation project at the Mass Audubon's Wildlife Sanctuary facility on Route 6 in Wellfleet involved the construction of a renovated, expanded Visitor Nature Center, new classrooms, an expanded staff dormitory facility, and site improvements to the existing walking trails to provide all persons' access. The recently completed Visitor Center is a "green building" and uses the most environmentally sustainable design, materials and construction techniques. Materials used at the Center include: structurally insulated panels (SIPs) in modular segments forming the walls; engineered wood products for building joists, beams and framing; 35% fly-ash mix in the concrete; and other recycled materials. In addition, a greywater filter, and an irrigation and recharge field were installed to supplement the existing Clivus Multrum composting toilet system. In August 2008, Mass Audubon received Platinum certification — the highest designation for a green building — from the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program of the U.S. Green Building Council.
Coastal Engineering's services included:
