Residential Development, Nantucket, MA
About this project:
Nantucket Island is a blend of history and natural beauty, but with nearly 40 percent of the island being protected conservation land, buildable properties are at a premium. Developing new residential properties on Nantucket, which boasts the nation's largest concentration of eighteenth-century buildings, presents the challenge of integrating the historical aspects that make the island unique with today’s home buyers’ demands for luxury, convenience and modern-day amenities. The developer of these new homes first purchased an existing parcel of land and then created a subdivision of 4 buildable home lots, including access roads within the development. Because of Nantucket’s balanced growth initiatives, not all of the lots could be developed in one calendar year so the homes were constructed over a period of time as each lot received the Town’s approval for development. The construction contractor, who had been building houses on the Cape and Islands for more than 25 years, designed and built “Nantucket-style” homes that maintain the balance between the amazing natural beauty of the island and the needs of modern home owners.
