Berkshire Hathaway Building, New Bedford, MA
About this project:
The Berkshire Hathaway Building is part of a 30-building former mill complex located in New Bedford, MA. Originally the building was the headquarters of The Hathaway Manufacturing Company, a textile manufacturing enterprise dating back to the 1888 China whaling trade era. Investor Warren Buffett gained control of the company in 1965, eventually closing the mill operation in 1985 and selling the 1 million square feet of space in 2000. After major structural retrofitting and repairs to the 4-story brick and concrete structure, a regional manufacturer moved its engineering development and test facilities to the historic building that stands today as a reminder of distant ties that still bind.
Coastal Engineering's services included:
- Structural engineering consultation and analysis
- Building evaluation and feasibility study
- Structural retrofit design and plan preparation
- Construction inspection.
